Ember, a red fox Labrador, died Aug. 12, 2022, after being left in a vehicle.
The K-9 was assigned to Chief County Fire Marshal Shawn K. Layton.
The death of Ember, who trained for 16 weeks before beginning work assisting in arson investigations in 2021, was first investigated by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, but the Attorney General took on the case last year. Apart from DiMarco’s initial acknowledgement of the matter, county government has remained mum beyond a statement last year mourning Ember’s death.
