SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for November 7, 2023 | SaltWireFREDERICTON, N.B. — The inquest into the death of a 16-year-old Fredericton girl who took her own life after being sent home from a hospital has begun in the New Brunswick capital.
Lexi Daken died by suicide in February 2021 just a week after being discharged from Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital with a referral for mental health services. Presiding coroner Emily Caissy and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses this week in public proceedings at the University of New Brunswick Law School, after which the jury can recommend ways to prevent similar deaths.Daken’s death prompted the province’s child and youth advocate to file a report on youth suicide prevention and mental health services.
Factors advocate Norman Bossé said were compounded by a shortage in mental health professions, an overreliance on health system crisis care, and a lack of prevention services in community settings.
