The CDC last week urged care providers nationwide to be on the lookout for such cases.
are struggling to pinpoint, according to a UT Health San Antonio news release.
Clinicians in the division of pediatric gastroenterology, the branch of medicine that deals with the digestive system and its disorders, have reported several such cases of the serious condition to thein recent months, according to the release. Some cases are so severe that they may necessitate a liver transplant, the release stated.
The CDC issued a release of its own April 21 advising medical practitioners and public health officials to keep an eye out for hepatitis symptoms in children. In the statement, the institution revealed clinicians at an Alabama children’s hospital had reported a cluster of similar cases among previously healthy children ages 1 to 6.Five of those cases were identified in October 2021 alone, according to the CDC release.
Hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C have been ruled out as the cause of the liver injury, according to the CDC release. Circumstantial evidence may point to another virus, adenovirus, as the culprit. Without exception, the Alabama children tested positive for adenovirus, a common bug that most often causes respiratory illness, the CDC release stated. Some of the children tested positive for adenovirus type 41, a strain previously linked to cases of acute pediatric gastroenteritis.
