Dear Pay Dirt: Frankly, I don’t see why I should.
My sister and I have had a bumpy relationship for years though it has been better in recent times due to us both making an effort. I have always found her to be extremely self-centered. My boyfriend and I are currently planning our wedding.
As my sister lives overseas we wanted to give her plenty of notice. She usually comes home for Christmas and the wedding is about six weeks after that. Making two trips would be difficult so I assumed she would skip Christmas at home this year and just come for the wedding. I was surprised when she contacted me to ask me to change that date to accommodate her.
I think this is not only unreasonable but abnormal behavior. It’s also ironic because I took time off work to attend her wedding overseas and did so without complaint. People in the family agree with me but also dismiss it as being pretty typical of her and something I should be used to. In a sense, I am used to it but I’m also over it. We are inviting her to the wedding with our date and venue but people in the family are suggesting that I reach out to her beyond that to ask her to be there.
