We talked to teens and tweens about what prompted their shift—what they're exposed to at school seems to be a common factor—and to parents about their concerns. Of course, we also wanted to know what dinner is like now. Here's what they told us."Last year in chemistry, we spent a lot of time talking about environmental science and the state of the earth in general.
Like Maya, Emma did a trial run. One week turned into two, then three. Now, says the 8th-grader, she doesn't see herself ever eating meat again. "I love animals and I know why people eat meat, because it's a good source of protein. It's how humans have evolved. But I just don't like to hurt animals," she says.
"I was creeped out by it," says Mary, who's been a pescatarian ever since, joining her mom, Allyson Lang. Her twin sister and her dad remain omnivores.are great options for families that include both vegetarians and omnivores. Offer a range of veggie, bean, and meat toppings and let each family member compose their own dinner.Bemusement. Denial. Reluctant acceptance. Not surprisingly, parents' reactions are as varied as their kids' reasons for going vegetarian.
