A social media expert says Canada and other global governments could scuttle Elon Musk's plans to moderate policing of Twitter in the name of free speech.
Heidi Tworek, a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, says how far Musk can take his free speech focus is not just a U.S. question, but a global one because of a wave of regulations social media companies are facing.
She says Canada is preparing to reintroduce a bill aimed at reducing hate speech on online platforms like Twitter and Musk has already been warned by the European Union that the company must obey local content rules targeting harmful and false information. With Musk's US$44-billion bid to take over Twitter yet to close, how he will tackle regulation is still unknown, but Tworek feels his approach is worth watching because Musk has engaged in alleged online harassment.
She points to incidents where Musk faced a 2019 defamation suit after he compared British cave diver Vernon Unsworth to a pedophile on Twitter and other times when he lashed out at journalists who criticized him. Despite securing Twitter board approval, Musk's bid to take over the platform still requires the sign off from shareholders and U.S. regulators, but he has already tweeted that he plans to make the platform's algorithms open source to increase trust, defeat spam bots and authenticate all humans.Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, attends the opening of the Tesla factory Berlin Brandenburg in Gruenheide, Germany, March 22, 2022.
