New Jerseyans are rallying around Gov. Phil Murphy during the biggest public health crisis the state has faced in a century, with a poll showing 71 percent approve of his job performance
The telephone poll of 704 Garden State adults shows the vast majority of residents support the measures Murphy has put in place to combat the spread of Covid-19. Other New Jersey leaders are getting a popularity bounce during the crisis as well, though none as dramatic as Murphy’s. And residents give far higher marks to the state’s response than that of the federal government.
Murphy is also more familiar to New Jersey residents now than he had been earlier in his term. In September, 21 percent had no opinion of his job performance. Now, that number is just 8 percent. Twenty-one percent give the governor negative marks in the latest poll. When it comes to Murphy’s response to the coronavirus emergency, 79 percent of those questioned residents gave him positive marks. That’s slightly higher than the 72 percent Monmouth measured for all governors in an earlier national poll.
According to the poll, many of Murphy’s executive orders have been greeted with near universal approval, such as requiring people to keep six feet apart when practicable , requiring face coverings in some public settings and limiting restaurants to take-out and delivery only . Murphy’s least popular measure is publicly naming people who violate the orders, which has 64 percent support. But unlike the other measures, most New Jerseyans are not aware of that one, and Murray said the responses could be more positive if the question was phrased differently.
