Munk Debates – David Brooks: Put down the guns, change can be affected through the political system

We need a bottom-up approach to social change. That can be done through our democratic institutions

The following is adapted from the opening remarks made by David Brooks on a Munk Debates podcast: “Be it resolved, politics as usual isn’t working. It’s time for a revolution.”

Our problems are cultural and social rather than political. You can’t solve a societal problem with a political solution from the top down, especially one based on centralized planning. Therefore, I believe we are going to have to fix problems at the local level, at the societal level, at the basic level of human relationship. Once you get some restructuring of connection across lines of diversity, then you can have some level of trust that allows you to have political solutions.
