With a month to go before the municipal elections, discontent is high among Vancouver and Surrey voters unhappy with the performance of their mayors and council.
A new Leger poll looking into voter sentiments in Metro Vancouver and B.C. found 48 per cent of respondents in Vancouver said things have worsened in their city over the past four years. That figure jumps to 60 per cent in Surrey, where council has been plagued with division and infighting, exacerbated after Mayor Doug McCallum was criminally charged with mischief.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.
That’s in contrast to Burnaby, for example, where approval ratings for Mayor Mike Hurley — acclaimed as mayor last Friday — sit at 62 per cent and in Coquitlam, where incumbent Mayor Richard Stewart has an approval rating of 69 per cent. A probability sample of a similar size would have a margin of error of +/- 3.1 per cent. Looking specifically into data for Vancouver and Surrey, the margin of error would be around 10 to 11 per cent.
Even though some of the issues are not within the jurisdiction of local governments, an “overwhelming” majority said they still want their municipal leaders to step up to the plate, said Mossop.
