University president says she has learned how connected people are to the anthem that was dropped from convocation ceremonies

JOHN'S, N.L. — Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador president Vianne Timmons admitted Friday she had not realized how emotionally connected people in this province were to the Ode to Newfoundland.
The university still plays the Ode to Newfoundland at other events that honour the history of the province.Convocation, Timmons said, is about the future. “And we want the province to come along that journey with us because it’s really important,” she said. “Words matter and our students are taught that, and we need to work with the province.”
