JUST IN: 1 person has been killed and 5 others have been injured in a shooting in downtown Seattle, police say. Suspect still at large.
"We’ve locked down the scene," Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best."This is not an active shooting at this point but we are collecting evidence and information."
The chief said that police were in the area at the time of the shooting and found victims in a one-block radius. She said the shooting appears to have been carried out by a lone gunman, who has been described only as a male, but"we don’t even have that information for sure at this point. It’s all very preliminary.”
Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said that one victim was pronounced dead at the scene and five others were transported to hospitals in what is believed to be critical condition. The five wounded were considered"red patients," or those who are critical and needed to be transported to hospitals, the fire chief said.
A nurse who was witness to the shooting told NBC affiliate King 5 that she heard the gunfire and rushed to help one of the victims. She was not identified by the station.managed by the University of Washington, confirmed to NBC News it was expecting patients from the shooting, but did not know how many.Doha Madani is a breaking news reporter for NBC News.
