12-year-old wins county spelling bee two years in a row — and says this one was 'much more nerve-wracking'

Mihir Konkapaka, a Mesa Verde Middle seventh-grader from Sabre Springs, won the 53rd annual county bee on Thursday for correctly spelling “exsufflation,” which means forcible breathing.

The runner-up to Thursday’s county competition was also the same as last year. Jedd Li, an eighth-grader at Francis Parker School, will serve as Mihir’s alternate should Mihir not be able to compete in the national bee.Five dozen students attending public and private schools competed this year, up from 37 last year

This year’s was the first county spelling bee held in person since 2019. For the past two years, the competition had been held online via Zoom because of the pandemic. The last time a San Diego County student won the national spelling bee was in 2012, when Francis Parker School student Snigdha Nandipati captured the national title. Before that, Poway student Anurag Kashyap won the national bee in 2005.
