“Mrs. Davis,” Peacock’s comedy about an all-knowing AI, has more twists and turns than a game of Chutes and Ladders.
that has taken the world by storm, has more twists and turns than a game of Chutes and Ladders. That’s only to be expected from co-creator Damon Lindelof, who is perhaps most well known as the showrunner of another famously twisty series, “Lost.” Unlike “Lost,” which lost my interest somewhere around Season 2 when I realized the writers had no idea where it was going, I have placed my full faith in “Mrs. Davis.
Yes, this show will take you from the Knights Templar to a woman being beheaded by a billboard to a nun galloping in on a horse like the Lone Ranger, but this show knows the reason behind every increasingly wild turn of events.
This grounding is what saves “Mrs. Davis” from leaning too far into puzzle box territory a la “Lost.” There are mysteries here, but behind every dazzling magic trick is an explanation, part of a complex machine designed to baffle our senses before pulling back the shroud to reveal the machine’s fiendishly complex inner workings. And on top of all this, as someone who was raised Christian, I found “Mrs. Davis” a delight to watch. The show is packed to the brim with religious Easter eggs .
It’s clear the showrunners put in the research when crafting “Mrs. Davis” and used that research to inform details big and small. Tara Hernandez, who co-created “Mrs. Davis” with Lindelof,“When we landed on this idea that a nun was going to be our hero in the story, it was really important to both of us that that was something she embodied truly and deeply, and it wasn’t just a cool costume to see riding on a motorcycle,” Hernandez said.
