As Canadians continue to pay soaring prices for food, the federal government should consider imposing a windfall tax on large grocery chains if a Competition Bureau review of the industry finds evidence of price gouging, a committee of MPs says.Tuesday with a list of recommended actions for the government to tackle rising food costs in Canada.
Canadians have been paying higher prices for groceries even as the overall inflation rate has started to drop while food retail giants are earning record profits and paying out millions in executive bonuses. This has led some to question whether the industry is operating competitively and in the public interest, the committee report says.
