Trudeau talked about having first met the Queen when he was just a boy, with his father, then prime minister Pierre Trudeau, and when he met her in 2015 he said he joked she had been much taller to him back then.Newly minted Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre emphasized the Queen’s long and enduring connection to Canada, noting she had been present for the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Montreal Olympics and the patriation of Canada’s Constitution in 1982.

He said the Queen had helped to preserve a space for political debate and welcomed the new reign of King Charles III. Outside the chamber Blanchet said the monarchy is an anachronism and it is time to consider something different. “She reminded us that we will get through the challenge and the pain of not being able to see loved ones. She asked us to greet the tough times with optimism,” he said.
