A few dozen MPs charged taxpayers a combined total of hundreds of thousands of dollars for some manner of communications expenses.

Over the last year of publicly available expenses, from Oct. 1, 2021 to Sept. 30, 2022, Poilievre had multiple contracts with a communications officer named Sabrina Kooistra, for a total of $35,561. On her Linkedin page, she lists her work as a part-time correspondence adviser starting when Poilievre’s only role was as MP for Carleton, Ont. Kooistra had the same role for Poilievre’s leadership campaign.

He said Anglin was given a contract, based on his expertise, to study issues related to the government’s books. Aitchison said they were diligent about keeping constituency and leadership campaign expenses separate, even going so far to pay back the House of Commons when they felt a staffer had spent too much time working on leadership issues.

MPs are permitted to use constituency funds for communications expenses, given the close relationship here, Hendrych said the contract was disclosed to the ethics commissioner who approved the relationship.Article content Minister Filomena Tassi gave $50,000 to a firm called Regnum Communications during that same time frame. Her press secretary, Edward Hutchinson, said the firm helps ensure she stays in touch with constituents.
