There are two women on Hockey Canada’s board of directors.
This is hardly news, and it is certainly not specific to Hockey Canada. Only in the past five years has the National Hockey League truly opened its eyes and doors to women seeking meaningful employment and influence in the game. Hayley Wickenheiser showed the way when she was named assistant director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2018. She is now assistant GM, and there are about 30 other women in a variety of front office and boardroom roles around the league.
Still, at the grassroots, junior and professional levels of the sport, the real power remains in the hands of white men. A group of 28 Canadian academics on Tuesday sent Fry an open letter, a document that in part addresses the sport’s stunning and dangerous lack of diversity.Article content “A small group of individuals use their power as gatekeepers to protect the status quo and maintain an out-dated and narrow definition of what it is to be a successful ‘man’ in the hockey world .”
Outspoken Conservative MP Kevin Waugh championed a scorched earth policy on Wednesday, and there may well be plenty of public support for his hyperbolic approach to fixing Canada’s apparently broken sport system.
