Independent MPP Randy Hillier was charged by Ottawa police and later released from custody on $35,000 bail on Monday. On Thursday, he sent out an email to supporters requesting donations.
In the meantime, he has been prohibited from posting or commenting anything regarding the so-called “freedom convoy” trucker protest on social media or about COVID-19 vaccination or mask mandates. He’s also not allowed to communicate with any of the alleged organizers of the convoy. In January, Hillier called federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra, who is Muslim, a “terrorist” online, and was permanently suspended from Twitter last month.
He surrendered to Ottawa police Monday morning on the charges, which include counselling an indictable offence, counselling an uncommitted indictable offence, mischief, assaulting an officer and obstructing/resisting an officer. Anber previously told the Star that the 64-year-old MPP denies all allegations against him, and said he doesn’t believe the Crown has enough evidence to assert that he committed an assault.
