Mozambican opposition leader Venancio Mondlane returns from self-imposed exile to a tumultuous welcome. Despite the official victory of ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo, Mondlane declares himself the winner of the disputed October election, sparking protests and clashes with security forces.

Mozambique ’s main opposition leader, Venancio Mondlane, returned from self-imposed exile amidst a sea of supporters who defied volleys of police bullets and tear gas to greet him at the Maputo International Airport. He declared himself the winner of the disputed October election, despite the official victor, ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo, scheduled to be sworn into office next week. Tens of thousands of supporters celebrated in the streets, mobbed Mr.

Mondlane’s vehicle, and clashed with security forces who used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the crowds. Videos posted online showed injuries and several deaths among the protestors. The October election results were widely seen as rigged by the government, with European Union observers reporting evidence of “unjustified alteration of election results” and Catholic bishops denouncing the official vote count. Nearly 300 people have been killed in three months of post-election protests, with protestors torching police stations, court buildings, and Frelimo offices across the country. Mr. Mondlane, speaking to journalists at the airport, said he returned to Mozambique to show he has no fear of the authorities and was willing to hold talks with the government. The disputed election has caused economic chaos for months, disrupting trade, energy supplies, and causing thousands of refugees to flee to neighbouring Malawi. Neighbouring countries, including South Africa, have also suffered economic damage as a result of the turmoil
