Serie A clubs have had their sustainability assessed by Enovation Consulting and researchers from UCL School of Management and Bocconi University.
Amongst the seven measurement categories are environmental performance, engagement and partnerships and one which Professor Taticchi says is arguably most important, strategy and governance. Each category then hones in on several of the twenty-eight indicators. In the environmental performance category decarbonization projects and carbon audits were key indicators of sustainability.
The “Pioneers” classification was made up of four clubs demonstrating the best sustainability practices in the league: A.C. Milan, A.S. Roma, Juventus F.C. and Udinese Calcio. Two of the clubs are American owned, and two are Italian owned. Because Juventus is a publicly traded company, its sustainability work is probably the most known in Italy. Curiously, the other club doing good work on the sustainability front is Cagliari F.C.
While Juventus, A.C. Milan and Roma are three of Italy’s biggest clubs, Dr. Pace said that one of the most disappointing surprises of this study was that several of Italy’s other large clubs are doing very little to address sustainability concerns. Only three of all twenty clubs have formal sustainability strategies, and just two have decarbonization strategies. Dr. Pace remarked that the soccer ecosystem in Italy still requires education and training on ESG and sustainability work.
Six clubs found themselves in the bottom cluster of the Index, while the other ten clubs were somewhere in the middle, doing some work. Both Professor Taticchi and Dr. Pace stress the fact that to a large number of clubs, climate change issues and sustainability in general are fairly new concepts. The experts see this Index as the baseline which can be used as the measuring stick going forward. They note two other peculiarities of the Serie A Sustainability Index.
The years ahead will be transformative for Italian soccer. Alongside the launch of the Index, and Serie A’s sustainability strategy, the league is now requiring that each club have a sustainability officer. Said officer will help guide clubs towards more sustainable futures. Moreover, The FIGC recently launched its own
