Toronto police say a motorcyclist in his 30s has died after a single-vehicle collision on Lake Shore Boulevard West early Sunday morning. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
Toronto Police Crash Investigation Underway
Speaking to reporters, Duty Insp. John Rose said the preliminary investigation indicates speed may have been a factor in the collision. Rose said the circumstances are still being investigated and that the inquiry is not complete. He described the scene as quite large, meaning officers will need time to fully examine the area.
Rose said officers with Traffic Services and the reconstruction unit will need time to investigate. The reconstruction unit is typically called in for serious collisions to map the scene and analyze physical evidence. Traffic Services handles investigations into collisions on city roads.
The victim has not been publicly identified by police. Rose said the victim's family has been notified and is distraught. He added that police are thinking of the family.
Family Notified as Police Request Witnesses
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken with investigators to contact Traffic Services. Witnesses can provide details that may help reconstruct what happened in the moments before the crash. No arrests have been reported in connection with the incident.
The collision occurred near the intersection of Lake Shore Boulevard West and British Columbia Road, an area that includes nearby roads such as Ontario Drive. The location is along a busy corridor in the city.
As a result of the investigation, Lake Shore Boulevard West is closed between British Columbia Road and Ontario Drive. Drivers are being asked to use alternate routes and to expect delays in the area. The closure is expected to remain in place while officers process the scene.
Road Closure and Traffic Delays Continue
The closure affects a stretch of Lake Shore Boulevard West that carries traffic through the area. Commuters who normally use this route may need to plan for extra travel time. Police did not provide an estimate for when the road would reopen.
Single-vehicle motorcycle collisions are investigated with attention to factors such as speed, road conditions and vehicle mechanics. Toronto police have not released further details about what led to the crash. The investigation remains active.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Traffic Services. Police are continuing to gather evidence from the scene and from witnesses. The name of the deceased has not been released.
