“I was four when he competed in 1976,” Dalas said. “I didn’t get to go to watch but I do remember watching him on TV — the old picture-tube TVs that we had. And when he got home, he walked up the driveway in the nice white and red Olympic suit that they used for opening and closing ceremonies, and I remember as a kid, I was so proud. That was my dad, and he was my hero.”Article content

“It was hard to get used to it, and I’m sure it was very difficult for him too,” said Nick, now 28. “It was hard for me to recognize the coach on court and then the father after, when practice was over. It would kind of follow through to dinner, for example. If we had dinner and I didn’t have the best practice, it would be hard for us to have a normal conversation without being pissed or annoyed. So that was difficult.
