Despite President-elect Donald Trump's suggestions, polls reveal that the majority of Canadians oppose the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state. While a considerable minority, nearly 25%, express some openness to exploring the concept, the majority remain firmly against a merger.

Two recent surveys conducted by Abacus Data and Angus Reid Institute reveal that most Canadians strongly oppose the idea of Canada joining the United States, despite comments made by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump suggesting the possibility. While a vast majority of Canadians, according to both polls, are firmly against a merger, a significant minority, nearly a quarter, expressed at least some openness to exploring the concept.

Interestingly, the Angus Reid survey, which polled both Canadians and Americans, found that a similar percentage of Americans (around 25%) were also supportive of a union between the two countries. \The Angus Reid poll specifically asked Canadians how they would vote in a hypothetical referendum on Canada becoming part of the U.S. A mere 10% of respondents indicated support for the idea, while 90% expressed opposition. Conservative party supporters emerged as more likely to support a Canada-U.S. union in both polls, with Abacus Data finding that Conservatives were almost twice as likely as Liberal supporters to be open to exploring the idea. Conversely, NDP, Liberal, and Bloc Québécois voters overwhelmingly opposed the merger. \Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in response to Trump's comments about using 'economic force' to absorb Canada into the United States, stated that there was 'not a snowball's chance in hell' that Canada would become part of the U.S. The Angus Reid survey also revealed that financial incentives, such as $20,000 or $60,000 offered by Trump, had little influence on Canadians' views, with the vast majority still rejecting the idea. Furthermore, one-third of Canadians surveyed believed Trump was serious about annexing Canada, and a significant portion (60%) expressed distrust in his assurance that he wouldn't use military force to achieve this goal
