And 66 per cent of those surveyed said the province would be better off addressing root causes of crime by shoring up supports for mental health, homelessness and addictions. The poll was conducted by Janet Brown Opinion Research and Trend Research for Alberta Municipalities, whose members have been generally opposed to the idea of a provincial police service.Article contentAs the province heads toward a provincial election at the end of May, the UCP government has insisted no final decision has been made on replacing the RCMP.

But the poll’s results should dissuade the government from following through on the idea, said Cathy Heron, president of Alberta Municipalities.“Albertans are simply not interested in a discussion or review of community policing in Alberta that is based on political aims or recommendations from the 2020 Fair Deal Panel report. Municipalities are interested in discussing the delivery of community policing with the primary goal of enhancing public safety.

Among respondents, 65 per cent said they favoured improving the justice system and ensuring adequate sentencing.
