The results of who has been elected to sit as an MLA in B.C. have now been released, and those results mark a milestone for women.

The B.C. Legislature X account noted that of the 93 elected MLAs, 44 are men while 49 are women, representing 52.7 per cent of the seats.

The Senate is closer to gender-parity, with 45 women being appointed to be a senator of the 92, representing 48.9 per cent.The B.C. Legislature’s timeline of women’s suffrage notes the first woman was elected to serve in the province in a byelection in 1918. “Following Smith’s victory, newspapers joked about the difficulties of adapting to the presence of a woman in provincial politics.”
