More wildfires expected through August in B.C., as hotter than normal temperatures forecast

More than 35,000 lightning strikes struck the southern and northeast parts of B.C. last week, sparking 121 new wildfires.

He anticipated a shift in fire danger to B.C.’s southern region and an elevated fire risk into August. However, he said the good news is that theconditions are not as severe this year as last wildfire season thanks to a wetter than normal spring and a late snowmelt.

“We are expecting above normal temperatures through August and into September,” he said. “The rain that we’re expecting in the southern portion will be more isolated or smaller amounts and all it will take is a couple of days of hot, dry weather to to bring us back up to high to extreme values.”Article content

Forests Minister Katrine Conroy noted that campfire bans came into effect for most of the province on Thursday and urged residents to be prepared. “Look around your home and remove any branches, leaves or pine needles from your roof your gutters, balconies, doorways and window sills. And you should also pay really close attention to corners or other tight spots where debris tends to gather,” she said, at the news conference.

Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth said 326 properties remain under evacuation order and another 500 on evacuation alert.
