The proportion of francophones who can speak English has increased constantly since 1991.

People take part in a demonstration outside McGill University in Montreal on Nov. 28, 2020, where they protested against government funding for infrastructure projects at two English-language educational institutions and also called on the city of Montreal to set up a body to protect the French language.For the first time in a census, more than half of those residing in Quebec can carry on a conversation in English.
