Lawyers were given 18 months to complete the mandatory training or risk suspension.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

“Are we willing to say the TRC calls to actions don’t apply to lawyers?” said Lightning-Earle, who is legal director of the University of Alberta’s Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge. “I don’t think we’re willing to say that. I think we need to uphold those calls to action.” Among those was a call for the Federation of Law Societies of Canada “to ensure that lawyers receive appropriate cultural competency training, which includes the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law, and Aboriginal–Crown relations.”Article content
