During the worst of the 2022 viral season, some children from CHEO and other pediatric hospitals in Ontario were airlifted to other hospitals around the province.

The addition of new critical care and mental health beds and strengthening of community urgent care clinics are among initiatives aimed at taking pressure off CHEO this year, said Tammy DeGiovanni, its senior vice-president of clinical services and chief nurse executive. The provincial government provided additional funding for beds and other supports after children’s health-care officials argued that the pediatric system was undersized to meet growing demand.“It is busy, but it is not as bad as it was this time last year.”

Hospitalizations for RSV have begun increasing at CHEO. Rates are still relatively low, but are expected to surge in coming weeks. Thampi and other officials rely on wastewater data from Ottawa Public Health — which tracks RSV, COVID-19 and influenza transmission in the community — for an accurate idea of when hospitalizations are likely to increase. Hospitalizations usually surge about 12 days after a wave shows up in wastewater data, Thampi said.

During Australia’s winter — which is usually a marker for flu season in North America — the dominant flu strain caused severe illness in many children. According to one report, 75 per cent of flu-related hospitalizations in Australia were among children. In a release this week, Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones urged Ontarians to get COVID-19 and flu shots as soon as they become available — likely Oct. 30 for the general public. The updated COVID-19 vaccine better protects against the Omicron XBB variant.
