Whether that’s enough to pacify public anger is another question. The summer gathering took place at a time of incredible collective sacrifice. Grandparents were absent from first birthdays, students missed crucial exams, bereaved families were denied the closure of a funeral. Regardless, the prime minister believes he still has the confidence of the people. Perhaps, but surely that’s in danger of wearing thin.
