More Calgarians went shopping last-minute for Christmas: Avison Young yyc yycbiz
The Avison Young vitality index shows the number of shoppers going to businesses across Calgary was up on the Friday and Saturday before Christmas this year. Retail corridors, most commonly associated with areas frequented by tourists, experienced a 131.5 per cent jump compared to 2021 numbers on the weekend before Christmas, while big box stores experienced 114.1 per cent jump. Shopping malls saw the smallest increase over last year with an 84.5 per cent jump.
Nationally, last-minute Christmas shopping across Canada was up 95 per cent this year when compared to 2021, with Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto seeing the largest increases. Last-minute shopping in the United States was up 47 per cent by comparison. Following a similar trend as in Calgary, national numbers showed a slight decrease of 3.1 per cent when comparing the weeks of Dec. 20, 2021, and Dec. 19, 2022.
“We’re at a moment in time where culture is driving foot traffic patterns and the vitality index provides insight into what, how and when spaces are attracting people,” Mark Rose, chair and CEO of Avison Young, said in a news release.The nationwide increase comes at a time when small business owners have expressed low confidence in the economy over the short term.
Annie Dormuth, a spokeswoman for CFIB, said the low optimism is expected to continue into the new year.From a small business perspective, it all depends whether the bump translated to increased sales from local businesses,” said Dormuth. “Heading into the holiday season there was weakened optimism for small business retailers, which is continuing into 2023.”
