More areas face severe weather conditions ahead of arrival of Storm Dudley.
Two storms set to hit the country from Wednesday are now expected to bring more disruption than first thought.
Amber ‘danger to life’ warnings for wind on Wednesday now cover much of Scotland, as well as parts of Northern Ireland and northern England. A larger area, stretching from Birmingham in England to beyond Fort William in Scotland and also incorporating Norfolk to the east and Wales to the west is currently subject to a yellow weather warning.
Drivers have been urged to stay home unless their journeys are essential, given the risks of getting caught up in potentially dangerous weather.National Highways head of road safety Jeremy Phillips said: ‘We’re encouraging drivers to check the latest weather and travel conditions before setting off on journeys and consider if their journey is necessary and can be delayed until conditions improve.
