It's pretty clear the Halifax Mooseheads will look vastly different at training camp in August than they did a couple of months ago.
Russell stopped short of identifying any candidates by name but described the pool of applicants so far as 'really good' with a few unexpected expressions of interest. Ideally, the Mooseheads would like to have a new coach in place before the QMJHL draft in early June but Russell said there's also value in letting more of the hockey season - junior and pro - play out to see who else might come out of the woodwork.
Star players Jordan Dumais, Jake Furlong, David Moravec, Lou-Felix Denis and Peter Reynolds are all moving on and there isn't an overwhelming amount of young talent in the pipeline to replace them to take another run. It's possible other returnees like Dylan MacKinnon, Owen Phillips, Jan Sprynar, Lou Levesque, Jack Martin, Logan Crosby and Liam Kilfoil take big enough steps in their game over the summer to make Halifax respectable but it begs the question: Is that really what the Mooseheads need at this point in time?
"We're actively talking and listening to other teams so there's a possibility we could be making a few moves at the draft," Russell said.
