Loosely inspired by his own childhood, the Oscar-winning screenwriter's new series is a coming-of-age drama about a prodigy growing up in poverty
differently than other networks did, McCraney recalled—not just as a quality show, but as “an important conversation to have in our community.” That wasn’t just an abstraction for McCraney; it had vivid practical ramifications.
Of course, as an African American creative in Hollywood, New York, and New Haven, McCraney still spends a lot of time doing this.“A lot of folks ask, Why hinge this story on a 13-year-old? I’m pointing you to the moment that the person in front of you learned how to do what they’re doing.” McCraney smiled sweetly for a moment and continued, “You’re watching me learn how to do exactly what I’m doing right now: How to talk to press, how to present, how to perform.
“We talk about young folks all the time as sponges,” said McCraney. “You have to be careful about what they pick up, because they will pick up the things you don't even know that you’re doing. They pick up your rage. They pick up your indecision. They may pick up your laugh, but they also pick up the way in which you are dismissive of certain things.
