Officials at NASA say the mission that will send a Canadian astronaut into lunar space for the first time is still on track to launch in November of next year.

Canadian astronaut and Stampede parade marshal Jeremy Hansen rides a horse during the Calgary Stampede parade in Calgary, Friday, July 7, 2023. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jeff McIntoshReality seems to be sinking in for the man poised to become the first Canadian astronaut to fly around the moon.

The last time human beings travelled that far was during the final Apollo mission in 1972. Artemis II will make Canada and the U.S. the only two countries to ever venture to the region beyond the dark side of the moon. "The success is in the learning that's happening, like, right now -- learning is happening right while we're sitting here in stuff that is going to serve us on our ultimate objective, which is to get to Mars."The other three astronauts on the Artemis II mission are all American: mission commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover and mission specialist Christina Hammock Koch.

"Or you should have seen Jeremy in his 10-gallon hat at the largest rodeo in the world in Calgary, Alta. There's an excitement there, I can tell you, that's quite exceptional." That includes Elon Musk's SpaceX, which is developing a version of its Starship colossus -- a Starship test failed in spectacular fashion over the Gulf of Mexico in April -- to deliver the Artemis III crew and their lunar lander."I think my concern is the same because they haven't launched," he said.

During last year's unmanned Artemis I test, the shield -- designed to burn away during the re-entry process -- did so less evenly than computer models had originally projected, a mystery engineers have yet to solve."If that decision is we have to do something drastic, then we'll do that. But right now we're on a path to press to get to the root cause, and then we'll make the final determination from there.
