Mont y, known for his bold and cocky personality, had been a Westminster finalist twice before and also won the American Kennel Club championship in December.
This victory marks his retirement from showing. The runner-up was Bourbon, a whippet, for the third time. Other finalists included a bichon frisé, a Skye terrier, a shih tzu, a German shepherd, and an English springer spaniel. Each dog at Westminster is judged on how closely it matches the ideal for its breed. Winners receive a trophy, ribbons, and bragging rights. While all dogs at Westminster are titled champions, they are also beloved household pets. Some also perform therapy work, search-and-rescue, or other canine jobs. The Westminster show is a celebration of the diversity within the canine world. While Monty the giant schnauzer took center stage, other breeds showcased their remarkable qualities. Brina, a 158-pound Neapolitan mastiff, competed in the first round. Her owner, Yves Belmont, Ph.D., is drawn to their imposing size, jowly heads, and history as guard dogs, but he also admires their intelligence. Tyra, a miniature bull terrier named after fashion model Tyra Banks, also strutted her stuff. Her owner and co-breeder, Jessica Harrison, describes the breed as a 'big dog in a small package' that always brings a smile to your face. The crowd also showed their love for various other breeds, cheering for dogs like a Pekingese named Lumpy, a golden retriever named Tuffy, and a Xoloitzcuintli named Calaco.Westminster also featured agility and obedience championships held on Saturday. Vanish, a border collie, claimed the agility prize, and Willie, an Australian shepherd, excelled in obedience.
