Island's public health director urges public not to panic, says most cases not severeDr. Mylene Drouin, Montreal's public health director, says the first suspected cases of monkeypox in the region were reported on May 12, tied mostly to men aged 30 to 55 who have had sexual relations with other men.
"Most of our cases are not severe," said Drouin, adding officials are still awaiting lab results to confirm whether they are, in fact, monkeypox. The virus is not a sexually transmitted infection, Drouin said, but one that is "mainly transmitted by close contact and [respiratory] droplets."
