\u0022We’re very fortunate to get a young player that’s got a ton of experience,\u0022 Habs head coach Martin St. Louis says.
Newhook, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound forward who can play left wing or centre, had 14-16-30 totals in 82 games last season with the Avalanche, who selected him in the first round ofIn 159 career NHL games, the St. John’s, N.L., native has 27-39-66 totals. He was with the Avalanche when they won the Stanley Cup in 2022, posting four assists in 12 playoff games.
Newhook only averaged 13:57 of ice time last season with the Avalanche. Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis told reporters in Nashville he will get a “better chair” and be asked to do more with his new team. St. Louis added that there will be less pressure on Newhook when it comes to making mistakes with the Canadiens and that the experience he gained during his three seasons in Colorado will really help him.
“Where we are as an organization versus where Colorado is, it’s a totally different place where we are right now,” St. Louis said. “I think some of the mistakes that you can make in Game 6 of a Stanley Cup final are a lot different, or in Game 5 of a first round. For us, we’re trying to develop our guys in an environment where we don’t want to handcuff them, we don’t want to suffocate them and over-coach them.
