Montreal is full of entrepreneurial spirit and with a pro\u002Dbusiness government it could regain its spot as Canada\u0027s business capital. Read on.

Much of the chatter among working family members centred around food, and hurrying the heck up.

For those who haven’t been paying attention since the 1980 referendum, the city that was once left for dead is today bursting with entrepreneurial spirit, an early edge in the artificial intelligence game and other burgeoning tech plays, and a pro-business government that invites a status quo-challenging question: Could Montreal 2.0 possess the drive to toppleMontreal has no shortage of power players to call upon.

Granted, that number may sound like peanuts, so consider this: Greater Montreal attracted $3.58 billion in foreign investment in 2022, a pile of money that created 8,000-plus new jobs with an average annual salary of close to $90,000, according to Montreal International, a non-profit organization that connects would-be investors with those looking for cash.

It is precisely this Montreal-ness and francophone identity, Finkelstein said, that the city should be trumpeting everywhere to encourage the world’s best and brightest to move there, particularly in an age where workers can work from anywhere, as Shopify’s digital-first employees do.Photo by John Kenney/Montreal Gazette

“If you are somebody who just graduated from university and you want a career, Toronto is a much better place,” he said, speaking of the present. “There are all kinds of big companies where you can get lost somewhere, and become one of those guys, you know, the executive vice-president of something.”

That’s not simply hyperbole. The kids, it seems, really do care. Deloitte’s 12th annual global Gen Z and Millennial survey found that more than 50 per cent of them will research a company’s environmental impact and its related policies before accepting a job. Upon getting a job, they need a place to live, which is another built-in Montreal business advantage, especially for those thinking about starting a family, or already with a young kid or two in tow.
