Up to 7,000 people were expected to attend games during the Montana state boys and girls basketball tournaments that conclude Saturday.
, Montana on Friday became the only state holding high school athletics events without restrictions on fan attendance, according to information obtained from the National Federation of State High School Associations .
“There’s been concerns expressed but there’s also been a lot of support from our schools and from, of course, just the general population,’’ Mark Beckman, executive director of the Montana High School Association, told USA TODAY Sports. Beckman said there are no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Montana, that his association is working closely with Montana’s state health department and “there’s no recommendation from them to cancel these events at this time.’’
As of Friday afternoon, 30 states had canceled or postponed competition, seven states were holding competition but limiting the number of spectators in attendance and competition had been had been completed in the 12 remaining states and in the District of Colombia, according to Bruce Howard, director of communications for the NFSHSA.
