Monkeypox is now declared a public health emergency in Travis County. So far, Austin-Travis County has seen 68 monkeypox cases.

PUBLISHED 1:03 PM CDT Aug. 09, 2022Austin and Travis County have declared a joint public health emergency in an effort to get ahead of the growing number of monkeypox cases in the county.

Dr. Desmar Walkes, who serves as the medical director of Austin Public Health, said Austin-Travis County has seen 68 cases of monkeypox, which puts the county on par with other areas that have declared the disease a public health emergency., but it’s not considered a sexually transmitted disease. The disease is spread through close, personal skin-to-skin contact, according to the CDC.

Austin Public Health was allotted 1,500 monkeypox vaccines. Those two-dose vaccines currently go to people who have been exposed to a confirmed case of monkeypox.
