“You got big cities where they’re solving murders within a day or two. Salem ain’t but so big and you got all these unsolved murders,' said the mother of one man shot to death in Salem City.

, 29, of Bridgeton, was shot in the torso and an arm on Aug. 4, 2020, and later died in the hospital., 27, was shot to death in nearby Penns Grove on Oct. 3, 2020, in another case that remains unsolved.Founded in the 1600s by Quaker John Fenwick, Salem boasts historic architecture and ties to key moments in our nation’s history, from the Revolutionary War to the abolition of slavery.

Additional surveillance cameras are also planned and the city is looking at using grant funds to purchase Ring doorbell cameras for residents who cannot afford them, Veler said.behavioral health care nonprofit Acenda Integrated Health These emissaries talk with families of crime victims, counsel survivors and prevent more trouble by convincing angry family and friends that retaliation isn’t the answer. The Acenda program looks at violence as a public health issue, according to the mayor.

“There is a critical teenage age group that can go either direction when they’re exposed to violence,” Telsey said. “I think we are making significant efforts to target youth in those groups to give them alternatives.” Hinnant says she understands why some in Salem are reluctant to speak up about crime. Residents need to know they can trust police if they provide a tip, she said.

“I would say that those areas where there is high crime get patrolled more than the neighborhoods where there isn’t high crime,” he said. “I hear the opposite. I hear that we’re being over-patrolled, that they’re too many officers.” “That’s a significant reduction and I think is a reflection of how seriously the municipalities are taking this, as well as our office,” Telsey said. On a daily basis, the city has a police presence from the city department, county sheriff’s office, state police and her office, the prosecutor noted.“It helped us with the resources that we received to be able to focus on solving many of those homicides that year,” he said.

Those hurt most by that lack of cooperation are families of victims who hear the rumors and may know the suspected killer as a neighbor, Telsey added. “We had so much going on,” she said. “Everybody got along. We had the pool. The kids don’t even have the pool no more. There was always something for these kids to do. Salem has nothing now.”

“”We have foreclosed on 126 of those properties,” Veler said. “We have 181 foreclosures in some form of process.” State aid will help fund repairs and the city has applied for a grant to expand the pool area, Veler said. To illustrate her point, Veler noted that a lack of public transportation to get to jobs is a challenge for local residents living in poverty. Finding grants for a public transit pilot program isn’t easy.

“So I had hoped when I ran to bring a different perspective on what can be done with community and regional partnerships,” she said.
