The mother of 'Baby Mary' was 17 when she left her daughter to die in a secluded park, authorities say.
Officials announced that the baby’s mother was arrested in South Carolina on April 24, more than 38 years after she left her daughter to die in a secluded park inThe woman, who was 17 at the time, has been charged with manslaughter, which would be a second-degree crime if committed by an adult, Prosecutor Robert Carroll said at a press conference Thursday morning. Her identity is not being released because she is being charged as a minor, Carroll said.
“The death and abandonment of this baby girl is a tragic loss, and even after 40 years remains just as heartbreaking,” Carroll said. A breakthrough in the case came several years ago when a DNA match between Baby Mary and the father was made, Carroll said. He declined to say if any genealogy websites were used in solving the case.
But despite advancements in DNA testing, officials were quick to stress the reliance on “old-fashioned” police work that lead to the arrest.
