Saskatchewan is betting that Russian aggression could open an economic door to the United States.
Premier Scott Moe’s recent trade mission to woo investors and push policymakers in the United States is part of a broader effort to sell more Saskatchewan uranium, potash and fuel to fill a gap in the American market left by Russia.
“I think there’s a recognition that we need each other — that we’re better together. We need their market, clearly, for our products. But they need us for what we provide,” Gitzel said.Photo by Matt SmithThe premier met with seven American senators and seven members of congress in a quick stop in Washington D.C., including Joe Manchin, the West Virginian Senator who chairs the Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
“There’s no hard and fast rules that say once it becomes a critical mineral, it is subject to all these restrictions and benefits,” he said. But he argues it could open a door to such changes and sends a signal the U.S. is serious about business in the sector.
