The impact of the crash caused the car to roll on to its roof
Police in Calgary are investigating a fatal crash of a what they call a “modified racing vehicle” on city streets.
Officers were called to the crash in the city’s southeast on Friday evening, and investigators believe the heavily modified 1984 Mercury Capri lost control, mounted the curb and struck two large decorative boulders. The driver, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene and investigators believe speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash.
Police say in a news release the car wasn’t roadworthy and appeared to have been modified for racing. They say it had only one seat for the driver, which did not have a seatbelt. The interior was stripped, the glass was removed and a roll cage was installed.
