The family running one of Mobile’s most historic restaurants is grieving following a fatal accident Monday afternoon.
According to information released by the Mobile Police Department, officers responded to the scene shortly before 4 p.m. Monday. They found Hamlin, 59, lying in the roadway “conscious and alert” after being struck by a westbound vehicle while trying to cross the road. The driver remained on the scene and showed no signs of impairment, according to the police report.
. “Yesterday we unexpectedly lost a dear member of our Dew Drop family. Robin Russell Hamlin, wife of owner Powell Hamlin, was tragically struck by a car and killed while trying to walk across the street. Those words strung together don’t seem to make any sense. It doesn’t seem real. We as a family all need time to process and rest. And so, we will be closed today to take it all in.”
That post drew more than 600 responses, reflecting the Dew Drop Inn’s vast clientele. The Dew Drop opened in 1924 and moved to its current location in the 1930s -- an era when the site, now deep in Midtown, practically would have been considered west Mobile. Powell Hamlin’s father bought it in 1968 and Hamlin has run it since 1991. It’s famous for a menu that ranges from distinctive hot dogs to seafood.
