There was no dispute that the 24-year-old Theodore man, then a 19-year-old on the run from police, fired the fatal shots. Surveillance video from the Peach Place Inn apartments off of Leroy Stevens Road showed the two scuffling just before the gunshots. Police arrested Perez within minutes in a wooded area adjacent to the complex.
A Jacksonville, Florida, native, Tuder was 31 when he died. Much of the testimony focused on his conduct on the day of the shooting. A member of the Mobile Police Department’s gang unit, Tuder was among a number of officers who had been searching for Perez since a federal warrant had been issued following his failure to meet with the pretrial services officer.
