He said the airport authority plans to reapply for the federal infrastructure money as soon as the Federal Aviation Administration issues a notice for a second round of funding opportunities. Curry said that could occur in September. “This is a great investment in the City of Mobile and our citizens will reap benefits,” said Council President C.J. Small, whose council district encompasses Brookley and surrounding neighborhoods. “Mobile has become an international city and we need an international airport to continue and maintain job growth in the global market.”
The longtime commercial airport serving Mobile at Bates Field has been criticized for its long driving distance to the city’s downtown area, and its lack of proximity to an interstate. The Mobile County Commission, in March, dedicated $15 million toward the project. Of that, $5 million will be paid out in $1 million annual increments and will go directly toward the terminal project. The balance -- $10 million – is expected to pay for improving several roads within the Brookley complex.
