Mnuchin said in a Sunday interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper that the checks have not gone out yet because the administration is encouraging Americans to sign up for direct deposit on the IRS website, not because of the choice to put Trump’s name on the checks. “That was my idea,” he said in the interview, “I think it’s a terrific symbol to the American public.”

The Treasury Secretary noted that Trump could have been authorized to sign each individual check, but chose not to for fear of slowing down the process.Trump’s name aside, there have been other problems distributing the relief funding. Millions of Americans who signed up for direct deposit, or were issued the wrong amount, because of an IRS glitch last week.

. “[He] has managed to turn a mildly positive story into one that’s going to be at least partly negative.” Even with Mnuchin taking credit for the decision, not everyone is convinced.In the same interview, Mnuchin was asked if relief for local governments was going to be included in the stimulus package the Trump administration is currently working on with Congress.
