DRYDEN, ON — Firefighting crews in the Northwest Region were working Monday to bring 18 wildfires under control. The largest of the new outbreaks is a 13-hectare fire near Smoothrock Lake in Wabakimi Provincial Park.
According to data posted Monday afternoon by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry's Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services branch, this fire doubled in size between Sunday and Monday. The other new fires are in the ministry's Nipigon, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake and Kenora districts, and range between 0.1 and 2.5 hectares in size.
Although the fire hazard on Monday was low to moderate in the Northwest, a restricted fire zone that was implemented across virtually all of Northern Ontario on Thursday remains in place until further notice.
